Hi There,
I know what troubles you are having with your machine. You may have hit the back punch a little. There is a screw on the right side of the arm it is attached to. Loosen and re centre the punch. The front punch doesn't really have much to do with threads snapping.
Use a fine good quality thread, the best are german, oil the wheel offen, and the little holes that are under the bobbins.
